Hello! My name is Alyssa Figueroa, and I am currently an associate editor at AlterNet, an independent, national news site, where I write feature stories, blog, manage social media and contribute to website management. I am a recent Ithaca College graduate who double-majored in journalism and politics. At Ithaca, I was a Park Scholar and I was also in the Honors Program. In the fall of my junior year, I studied abroad in London, where I took classes and interned at the Co-operative Party Headquarters.

For three years, I was a writer and editor for Buzzsaw Magazine, an alternative, monthly magazine. I was also heavily involved in the Labor Inititative in Promoting Solidarity, a workers' rights group dedicated to economic and social justice. I also worked as a writer for Fuse magazine, Ithaca College's student-written publication for prospective students.

I have interned at the School of the Americas Watch, where I gathered support to pressure my local Congressman to endorse a School of Americas shut down. I have also had the wonderful opportunity to intern at a variety of independent media outlets through the Park Center for Independent Media including Democracy Now!, a daily TV/radio program, FAIR, a national media watch group, Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia's alternative newsweekly and the Prometheus Radio Project, a non-profit organization that advocates for community radio stations.

At Democracy Now!, I worked in the Outreach department, helping supporters get Democracy Now! aired on their local station. At FAIR, I fact-checked articles, conducted studies, rigorously analyzed news stories and contributed to both their magazine and blog. The summer prior, I interned at  At Philadelphia Weekly, where I fact-checked articles and also had the opportunity to write two pieces and videotape and edit a news video piece for their website. At Prometheus Radio Project, I did general campaign work, helped create outreach materials, wrote an e-newsletter story and wrote and edited many proposals.
