Welcome to my ePortfolio! My name is Emily Baker and I'm currently a freshmen at Ithaca College. I'm an Integrated Marketing Communications major in the Roy H. Park School of Communications. I am expected to graduate in May 2015.
During high school, I did a lot of writing whether it be in certain classes I took or while writing for our award winning school newspaper, The Forum. By my senior year of high school, I had become Assistant Editor of the Features section. I love to write whether it be for a class I'm taking or just for pleasure.
As an incoming freshmen in the Roy H. Park School of Communications, I was required to take a course called S'Park. S'Park introduced me to many media trends and topics that are impacting our current generation.
I have learned a lot and can now look at the media in different lighting thanks to this introductory course. In order to succeed in a media related career, you need to be very versatile in all aspects of media. Being familiar with all types of media outlets and influences will get you very far in a profession in communications because the media is constantly changing. In order to work in the media, you need to be able to keep up with it. For example, the social networking sites are constantly being updated whether it be e-mail to instant messaging, MySpace to Facebook or the recent introduction of Twitter. These social media sites are extremely important to our society and the media has definitely taken advantage of that. The communications industry is rapidly updating and changing and I've learned that in order to work i this type of profession, you need to be able to stay updated and ready for the new changes that are inevitable.
As of right now, my career goal is to work in the industry of Public Relations. Public Relations plays a major role in the media and the way it is portrayed to its audience and I want to be a part of that. I hope to graduate from Ithaca with a better understanding of how the media works and what works best when advertising and promoting certain products or brands. I chose to major in communications here at Ithaca not only because of its prestiges reputation, but also because I love working with people. For the past six summers, I have worked as a tennis instructor and camp counselor at my local tennis club which has given me opportunities to interact with customers and solve problems with campers or other staff members. This job has opened many doors for me and has taught me many lessons. I have been able to overcome many obstacles while still maintaining a professional and patient attitude.
Thank you so much for looking at my ePortfolio!
