My name is Greg Johnson, and I am a sophomore at Ithaca College. I am double majoring in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) (B.S.) and Communication Studies (B.A.). In addition to this I am also pursuing a minor in Legal Studies.
I graduated from Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square, NY, a town located about 20 minutes north of Syracuse. The majority of my high school career was split between excelling in the classroom as well as rigorously devoting myself to my extracurricular activities. Outside of the classroom most of my time was split between Student Leadership and Mock Trial. In my school's student leadership group, I was a vital member in ensuring that our activities and projects were running smoothly. I began taking on leadership roles beginning by chairing the homecoming dance committee during my freshman year and continued to expand my roles to include chairing such committees as homecoming as a whole, every dance held at my school for 3 consecutive years, talent shows, and my school's largest annual fundraiser, a dance-a-thon, which went to raise approximately $1,500 for a charity at a local hospital that provided for non-medical expenses for their child patients. The epitome of my work with this group was when i was elected to the New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities (NYSCLSA) to represent District 10 (Onondaga, Cayuga, Oswego, and Cortland Counties). As a part of this group I planned and executed the annual NYSCLSA State Student Leadership Conference for over 500 students from all across New York State. In Mock Trial I became a strong addition to the team during my freshman season, and went on to lead my team to two championships in the Oswego County tournament in 2009 and 2011, as well as a third place finish at the 2011 regional tournament.
I chose to attend Ithaca College because the Integrated Marketing Communications major they offered was unlike any other major I had seen before. By blending the communication and business worlds it seemed like that major would be my best avenue to enter the extremely competitive worlds of either advertising or public relations. I have also decided to pursue a second major in Communication Studies as well as a minor in Legal Studies.
On campus, I am involved in several activities such as the Campus Affairs Committee as a part of the Student Government Association, Mock Trial Team, the Ithaca College branch of the Front Row Foundation, Park Peer Advisers, in which I will act as a mentor for incoming freshmen in the Park School of Communications, as well as a club that I helped start on Campus- Be Irie, which sells handmade crafts and uses its profits to help support educational efforts in Jamaica.
I also hold a leadership position in several of these clubs. I was elected to the position of "Roy H. Park School of Communications Senator" for the 2012-2013 school year. In this role, I will represent the school of communications at the Student Government Association meetings while working on initiatives such as increasing school spirit and various projects within the school. I am also the Communications Coordinator for the Mock Trial Team and the Vice-President of Be Irie.
Through everything that i have learned, I have developed a personal philosophy best said by quoting George Feeny, a character from the sitcom "Boy Meets World."
"Believe in yourselves. Dream. Try. Do good."
I believe that following these simple suggestions will not only help me become successful in the communications field, but a better person in general.
