“The first thing we need to do is recognize and trust our own Inner Nature, and not lose sight of it. For within the Ugly Duckling is the Swan, inside the Bouncy Tigger is the Rescuer who knows the Way, and in each of us is something Special, and that we need to keep.” — The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff
My name is Jessica Afrin, and I hail from Charleston, SC. I'm a Television-Radio major, Class of 2016, with an Honors minor. My goal in life is to become a professional radio disc jockey. I'm a DJ for VIC radio (Ithaca College's Internet-only station), and in the summer of 2011 I was a Radio counselor-in-training for Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp. Music is a huge passion in my life, and it’s such a joy to be able to share that. I also write music reviews and a weekly blog on covers for Cake: A Music Zine. Outside of radio, I enjoy hands-on learning. I'm exploring my different options for my college degree; I find so much interesting!
I have many other talents. I’m a writer. I’ve done creative writing (poetry, short stories) and journalistic writing (newspaper), and I’ve won awards for both. I've been a copy editor for two years now, first for The Tribal Tribune, my high school newspaper, and now for The Ithacan and Cake. I play the piano, drums, and guitar; I sing and write songs. I'm a member of Standing Room Only Performing Arts Company's show choir. I am a voracious reader. Traveling and exploring are two of my great loves. I’m also fantastic at research and organization, and I have extremely good observational skills (I tend to latch on to detail).
I need to gain as much experience in the radio industry before leaving college as I can. I’m already a VIC DJ, and I plan to do that for the entirety of my time here at Ithaca College. I plan to do internships every summer, and I'm scheduled to take the test for my Society of Broadcast Engineering Radio Operator certification at the end of this semester. I think it will be interesting to see the evolution of radio as the technology advances even further. In the fields of both television and radio, a strong desire is arising for Internet-based content (available for streaming), which is creating exciting opportunities for young and new people from all over the world. I'm proud to be a part of a generation that will be revolutionizing and shaping my chosen areas of employment.
