Hi my name is Katelyn Byrnes and currently I am a senior attending Ithaca College majoring in Gerontology and minoring in Occupational Science. While attending Ithaca College I have had the privilege and opportunity to work with numerous older adults within the Ithaca community. Also I have worked with numerous older adults with various disabilities treating them in the Ithaca College Occupational Therapy Adult Clinic. In the future, I would love the opportunity to assist older adults who have Alzheimer's disease and dementia to live their life to the fullest.
My desire to major in gerontology and minor in occupational science was initially hatched because growing up I always had a strong passion for working with individuals with disabilities.Patience, creativity and a strong desire to help others have always been the ultimate qualities and attributes I have embodied in my life.I have always been quick to get involved in numerous organizations such as volunteering for the Special Olympics,Abilities in Action Occupational Therapy Program,The Student Occupational Therapy Association and The Aging Gerontology Educational Society which organizes activities for the elderly and lends a helping hand to the less fortunate giving me much enjoyment and gratification.
Through my experiences on campus assessing, evaluating, and implementing occupational therapy for older adults I have acquired expertise and knowledge working with special needs individuals.Seniors with illnesses, disabilities and disorders have flourished after I have implemented specific teaching strategies to improve their balance, coordination, movement and walking. With my extensive clinical and volunteering experience interacting with adults I possess the skills and determination to motivate others to strive to do their best.
