My name is Kyla Pigoni and I am a senior journalism major at Ithaca College, with minors in honors and legal studies. Currently, I am focused on a career in the entertainment industry with the goal of becoming a television producer.
My goal for the future has changed considerably as a result of two internships I have held over the course of my college education. While journalism will always hold a special place in my heart, I am now focused on a career in the entertainment industry that will allow me to utilize my love for writing, organization and creativity. I was fortunate enough to spend the Fall 2011 semester at the Ithaca College Los Angeles satellite campus where I interned for the late night show Conan. As the talent department intern, I was given the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of putting on a television show, as well as all the work that goes into booking guests. During the summer of 2012 I lived in NYC and interned for The Colbert Report, where I worked in production and audience. As a result of these two shows, I am now interested in rising through the ranks at either a studio, network or within an individual television show.
I'm often asked why I continued to major in journalism after discovering that I wanted to pursue a career in television. The answer is quite simple--despite a change of field, the skills used as a journalists are easily transferable. I discovered during my internships that the world of television production is best learned through hands on experience, while the ability to write, interview, transcribe and communicate are classroom attributes that can be used in any field. I have found all of these to be extremely useful in the world of television production and hope to continue perfecting them on my path to becoming a producer.
