Leah Doerner

Hello and welcome to my eportfolio!

My name is Leah Doerner and I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Rochester, New York. Currently I am a freshman at Ithaca College majoring in Integrated Marketing Communications with a minor in Legal Studies. My expected graduation date is May 2015.

During my next four years at Ithaca College, I hope to gain exposure and understanding in all aspects of the communications industry. With the direction of the knowledgeable professors and opportunities available through extracurricular activities, I will be able to build my skills both in and outside of the classroom. Already I have taken advantage of the unique opportunity to work on the crew of an ICTV show and listen to distinguished alumni speakers through Park AdVenue, Ithaca College’s chapter of the American Advertising Federation. Through these experiences, I have been able to affirm that my true passion in the field on communications is for advertising and graphic design. I find it fascinating how much persuasive power a well-designed image can have. Creativity has always been a passion of mine and finding a career that encourages thinking abstractly and allows for creative interpretations seems like the perfect fit.

Along with being interested in the persuasive power of creative graphics, I have a deep-rooted passion for helping others. I’ve always found the greatest satisfaction in being able to bring joy to those who are less fortunate than me. Whether this be through organizing fundraisers, rebuilding homes, or simply spending time talking and listening to people who may have no one else, I’ve always found that these are the times when I am happiest. Therefore, while studying in Ithaca, my hope is to learn not only the essentials of communications, but also study people and the world we live in. Understanding cultures, world issues, and the way people interact with one another is essential in order to communicate effectively in a global environment. Ultimately my goal is to combine skills in communications and my passion for helping others to raise awareness for causes that help to support humanitarian and missions efforts across the globe. It would be selfish to use what I’ve been taught for only personal gain. Since I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn from top industry professionals, I want to be able to use my knowledge to benefit the greater good.

I’ve already learned so much in my short time studying at the Park Schools of Communications. One point that has stuck out to me is the importance of networking. Making connections is so important and a great benefit when searching for internships and jobs. It’s important to always act and look professional because you never know whom you may encounter throughout the day, especially wandering the halls of Park. Also, it’s important to have a broad set of knowledge and skills. Having strong skills in multiple areas of expertise is one way to distinguish yourself when competing for the highly coveted positions in the world of communications. An important set of skills to have is the ability to effectively use technology. Technology is constantly evolving and in order to stay up to date with common practices you must be a frequent user of new devices and social media platforms. This is an emerging area in communications that is sure to become very prominent in the future. Understanding different cultural norms is also essential for success in such an international field. Globalization opened the possibilities for working in global teams and spreading campaigns throughout different nations. Especially with my interest in the global community, understanding the practices of different societies will be a vital skill. Lastly, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of photography and film in shaping societal views and opinions. An influence photo or film can reach a wide audience and raise awareness on an issue that may have other wise been overlooked. And most importantly, there’s no need to be a professional photographer to make an impact.
