"All our dreams can come true --if we have the courage to pursue them." - Walt Disney

Trying to figure out where my interests lie has been one of the harder parts for me in planning out what I want to do with the rest of my life. However, after taking a mass media class in high school, I decided to further explore the field of communications and the career possibilities embedded within it. While doing some research, I realized just how many aspects of my life revolve around effectively communicating with others and around exposure to social media in all different forms. The media is an extremely powerful body that finds a plethora of ways to be exposed to people constantly around the world. For me, advertising is one of the most interesting topics within communications because I have realized that the ads and commercials I have seen throughout my life have greatly influenced me in one way or another. I look forward to learning more about advertising, and I hope to one day contribute to the field as a successful copywriter.

In a field like the media that is constantly changing, it is helpful to know these five things that stay the same. The first is the extreme importance of networking. Networking allows you to develop relationships and share ideas with other members of the field, and putting and keeping yourself out there can lead to endless opportunities for success. Internships are also key to achieving success in the field, as they allow you to determine what you do or don’t want in your career. So many people can get the same degree, but internships are what differentiate one person from the next. Also, the easiest way to get into media is to improve it, whether it be through an internship or through other means. It is valuable to know, especially before getting involved, that you need to be very careful about how you portray yourself on the Internet. The evolving social media sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, sometimes make it hard to always be saying or doing the right thing, but you have to be mindful of the fact that once you put something on the Internet, it can never completely be erased. In this day and age, we rely on our eyes more than any other sense to take in information. Although you might not necessarily think so, photographers shape so much about what we know about the world, and their contributions to the media are very significant. Advertising is one of the contexts that benefits greatly from the work of photographers. If consumers see something appealing to them then the ad is doing its job. It is important to remember that technology shapes what consumers take in, and the advertisements are what influence consumers.

These facts are really going to be helpful for me to keep in mind as I pursue my career in communications. With such a complex field that falls under a lot of constant scrutiny, it is essential to always be knowledgeable about how to conduct yourself and to approach tasks with a goal-oriented mindset. I can’t wait to further my education in this field and explore all the opportunities that lie ahead!
