My name is Noreyana Fernando and I am a Pre-med Journalism major with minors in French and Chemistry at Ithaca College. I hail from Colombo, Sri Lanka, where I started my career as a journalist when I interned for one year with Newsfirst, Sri Lanka in 2011.
I started off at Ithaca College as a Biochemistry major but a semester later, I transferred into Ithaca College's esteemed Journalism program. I indulged in print, broadcast (radio and TV) and online journalism and such involvements played a significant role in my decision to join the journalism program.
During my freshman year, I was a staff writer for The Ithacan, the newspaper run by the Roy H. Park School that was named the best non-daily student paper in the country for 2011 by the Society of Professional Journalists. I also worked for WICB and VIC, the college-run radio stations. I started off my sophomore year joining the executive board of WICB as their Assistant News Director.
During my freshman year, I also I worked as an assistant producer reporter for ICTV's Newswatch16. Through my work at Newswatch16, I interviewed and worked with people from all walks of life, from apple farmers to notable politicians.
I am currently Assistant News Editor of The Ithacan and Assistant News Director of WICB FM. I am a Resident Assistant (RA) at Ithaca College. I also serve as the president of the Park Association for Journalists of Color.
